Shenzhen is getting a new contemporary art venue. The Prince Bay Art Center will open its doors on September 30, with British artist Jon Burgerman's It's Great to Create! as its inaugural exhibition.

Located in Prince Bay, Shekou, Shenzhen, the center aims to explore how art can connect with everyday life while serving as an open public space for diverse voices, experiences and ideas.

Born in Britain in 1979, Burgerman is known for his colorful characters, wide eyes and loose, playful forms. He has exhibited at institutions such as the Tate Modern in London and the Ludwig Museum in Budapest. His work is included in public collections, including the Victoria and Albert Museum (V&A) in London.

His work is influenced by early animation, Abstract Expressionism, the CoBrA movement, Art Brut and Pop Art. However, his approach also comes from something much simpler: as a child, he drew cartoons on paper and dreamed of making them come to life. His artistic work has extended beyond galleries through collaborations with well-known global brands, including Apple, Samsung, Pop Mart, CASETiFY and Nike. Burgerman believes that art should not be confined to galleries; it should be part of everyday life and connect with people in real ways.

It's Great to Create! brings a playful approach to the gallery. The title echoes Burgerman's 2017 book of the same name, which contains 101 creative exercises. Its central idea is simple: creativity is not limited to artists. The show in Shenzhen will invite visitors to engage with, experiment with and respond to the works, rather than simply observe them. It will also feature a new series of paintings, specially commissioned sculptures, installations as well as new media and digital works.

Burgerman once said, "If someone sees my work and thinks, 'I want to make something too,' that's the best thing my art could do."

Both the Prince Bay Art Center and the exhibition will open on September 30, 2026. The exhibition will run through February 28, 2027, adding a new highlight to Shenzhen's contemporary art scene.
