This August, a range of exhibitions will be on view at the Guangdong Museum of Art. Here's your guide to a rewarding artistic experience.
Fernando Botero's First Exhibition in South China
费尔南多·博特罗华南地区首展
Fernando Botero (1932–2023) was one of the most iconic artists of Colombia and Latin America in the 20th century. His distinctive visual language—marked by voluminous forms and structured compositions—created a world of humor, order, and vibrant presence. Everyday scenes and figures in his work are transformed through exaggerated proportions and refined brushwork, forming his signature style known as "Boterismo."
Jointly presented by the Guangdong Museum of Art and the Fernando Botero Foundation, this exhibition marks Botero's return to China after the 2015 "Botero in China" tour (Beijing, Shanghai) and his first major show in South China. Featuring 81 key works across themes such as Latin American life, the circus, bullfighting, still life, and sculpture, the exhibition showcases a rich variety of media, including oil painting, watercolor, and bronze.
Through this exhibition, the Guangdong Museum of Art invites viewers not only to experience the formal beauty of Botero's art but also to connect with the warmth, depth, and universal resonance embedded in his uniquely Latin American vision.

Jongkyu Park’s Solo Exhibition: Spectres of the Bitstream
朴钟圭个展:比特流的幻影
Jongkyu Park, an important figure in contemporary S. Korean art, works across painting, installation, and media art. His practice has long engaged with the notion of "nothingness" in Eastern philosophy and the binary logic of Western information systems, seeking to address the existential paradox of "being within non-being" through a distinct visual language. Central to his work is the recurring motif of the "bitstream," which evokes both the cadence of data transmission and the fundamental units of human perception and existence.
This exhibition explores the multiple pulses that shape the rhythm of human life—from the beat of the heart and the flow of consciousness to the silent relay of digital signals. Through the idea of the "phantom," Jongkyu Park weaves together life's rhythms and data's vibrations, crafting a narrative that crosses sensory boundaries.

Beyond Objects: The Poetics and Reflections of Lacquer Art
器物之外——漆艺的诗与思
Beyond Objects: The Poetics and Reflections of Lacquer Art embarks on a critical inquiry into the expansive theme of tradition and innovation in contemporary lacquer practice. Anchored in this conceptual axis, the exhibition assembles the distinctive artistic trajectories of Tang Mingxiu, Xie Zhen, Zhang Wenzhi, Guo Xiaoyi, and Shi Pengcheng. Through their diverse approaches and material vocabularies, a multilayered, dialogic space emerges—one that opens up the manifold possibilities of lacquer as a medium for contemporary artistic expression and cultural reinterpretation.
By activating both formal language and audience experience, the exhibition seeks to explore new pathways for contemporary lacquer art at the intersection of public engagement, interactivity, and experimentation.

美美与共——集
第60届威尼斯国际艺术双年展中国馆回归展(广东站)
Atlas: Harmony in Diversity, co-curated by Wang Xiaosong and Jiang Jun, unfolds in two complementary sections. The second, Transmit, features works by seven leading contemporary Chinese artists—Che Jianquan, Jiao Xingtao, Qiu Zhenzhong, Shi Hui, Wang Shaoqiang, Wang Zhenghong, and Zhu Jinshi. Together, these sections trace a dialogue between historical imagery and contemporary creation, offering a layered perspective on artistic inheritance and renewal.
