Explore Hakka overseas Chinese stories through Meizhou qiaopi exhibition

Ahead of International Museum Day on May 18, the Hakka Museum of China (中国客家博物馆) in Meizhou will launch a special exhibition on Meizhou qiaopi, highlighting the history of Hakka overseas Chinese communities.

Qiaopi refers to historical documents, letters, account records, and remittance receipts sent by overseas Chinese to their families. Meizhou qiaopi, along with those from Chaoshan and Wuyi, has been inscribed on UNESCO's Memory of the World Register.

More than 120 exhibits, including qiaopi documents and overseas Chinese artifacts, will trace the journeys of Hakka people overseas and the emotional bonds maintained through letters across generations. Through these faded correspondence and historical objects, visitors can gain insight into the lives of overseas Hakka communities and their enduring ties to their hometowns.

The exhibition will run from May 16 to August 30 at the museum's temporary exhibition hall and is free and open to the public.
