Hit French musical "Molière" to premiere in Guangzhou this October

The hit French musical Molière will make its China premiere in Guangzhou this October. The show will run from October 9 to 12 at the Guangzhou Opera House, as part of the 5th Guangdong–Hong Kong–Macao Greater Bay Area Culture and Arts Festival.

Since its debut in Paris in 2023, Molière has become one of France's most popular musicals. It has completed more than 160 sold-out shows, attracted over 500,000 viewers, and won seven major theatre awards. The production tells the story of Jean-Baptiste Poquelin, known as Molière, the "father of French comedy," whose works shaped modern theatre and the French language.

A new kind of French musical

Molière redefines traditional French theatre. The show combines live singing, energetic dance, and modern music, including rap, to present Molière's life and struggles. It depicts how he left a secure life at court to follow his passion for the stage, challenged social hypocrisy, and stayed true to his ideals until his final performance.

The musical includes three main storylines—art, love, and family—and features five "plays within the play," inspired by Molière's best-known works such as Tartuffe and The School for Wives. With bold choreography, modern visuals, and immersive staging, the show connects the world of 17th-century France with today's audiences.

A teaser of magic: The Guangzhou fan meet

Ahead of its October premiere, a special immersive fan event took place on September 22 at Grandview Mall's Winter Plaza. Lead actors Yanis Richard (Molière), Abby Bernadotte (Prince de Conti), and Aliya (Armande Béjart) flew in directly from Shanghai to meet local fans.

In a heartfelt showcase, the trio performed five songs from the musical, including the stirring duet We Despise It, the soaring theme I'm Used to Dreaming, and the emotional ballad Destined. The live vocals, raw emotion, and interactive Q&A gave Guangzhou audiences a rare glimpse into the musical's intensity and artistry.

For the Guangzhou audience, the China premiere represents not only a spectacular night of theatre but also a bridge between East and West, past and present, and art and life.

This October, witness the fire of genius, the sound of rebellion, and the heartbeat of theatre—as Molière comes alive on stage once more.
