Under the baton of its honorary concertmaster Lorenz Nasturica-Herschcowici, the Shenzhen Symphony Orchestra (SZSO) will present masterpieces by Mozart and Tchaikovsky next Friday evening. The concert will also feature internationally acclaimed cellist Gautier Capuçon and oboist Domenico Orlando.
The performance will open with Mozart's "Oboe Concerto in C Major." Composed in 1777, the work was once believed lost, surviving only in the form of a flute concerto until its rediscovery in the 20th century.

The first movement radiates unrestrained joy, with Orlando's agile oboe dancing gracefully above the orchestra. In the second movement, his instrument takes on the voice of a lyrical soprano, touching hearts with long, delicate melodies. The finale concludes with a spirited rondo, its youthful theme leaving a purely delightful impression.
This will be followed by Tchaikovsky's "Variations on a Rococo Theme." Though composed during a period of personal turmoil, the piece pays elegant homage to the joyful classicism of Mozart's era. Performing on his 1701 Matteo Goffriller cello, "L'Ambassadeur," Capuçon will unfold an original theme brimming with charm before guiding the audience through a sequence of variations that balance technical brilliance with emotional depth. A striking showcase of Tchaikovsky's melodic genius, the work gives full play to the cello's lyrical songfulness, dazzling virtuosity, and playful agility.

After intermission, the SZSO will perform Tchaikovsky's "Symphony No. 5 in E Minor." Completed in 1888, this monumental work reflects the composer's emotional depth and philosophical maturity.
A fate motif threads through all four movements: the second movement features one of the most beautiful horn solos in the classical repertoire, while the third offers dreamlike respite through an elegant waltz. The finale then revisits the fate motif, transforming it into a radiant major key — completing a spiritual journey from turmoil to transcendence.
Audiences can look forward to an evening bathed in Mozart's radiant sunshine and stirred by Tchaikovsky's profound introspection.
