On August 6, "The Litchi Road," a highly anticipated stage play adapted from Ma Boyong's bestselling novel, will take the stage at the Huizhou Cultural Arts Center.
The play revolves around the intriguing question: how can fresh lychees, which perish within just three days, be delivered to Chang'an (the capital of the Tang Dynasty, located near the modern city of Xi'an)? Tasked with this impossible mission, low-ranking official Li Shande finds himself entangled in the undercurrents of power and politics. His journey highlights the struggles of ordinary people caught in the tides of history while underscoring the quiet resilience of those who remain true to their purpose in turbulent times.
Through innovative stagecraft and multimedia technology, the production recreates the prosperity of Chang'an and the bustling streets of Lingnan during the Tang Dynasty. The set design draws inspiration from Tang imperial architecture, combining lychee-red color motifs with dynamic projections of Lingnan's landscapes, crafting a breathtaking stage spectacle that bridges time and space.
