A festive evening awaits with the Milan Symphony Orchestra (MSO). Under the baton of Eliseo Castrignano, the MSO will present a New Year's concert for local music lovers Dec. 30, featuring solo performances by tenor Domingo Stasi and mezzosoprano Sabrina Messina.
The program takes the audience on a vibrant journey through operatic and symphonic highlights. The first half opens with the dramatic overture from Verdi's "La Forza del Destino," followed by the sparkling wit of Mozart's "The Marriage of Figaro Overture." It continues with a poignant soprano aria, "Un bel dì" from Puccini's "Madame Butterfly," before revisiting Mozart with the majestic "Magic Flute Overture." Beethoven's powerful "Symphony No. 5" comes next, contrasted by the famous tenor aria "La donna è mobile" from Verdi's "Rigoletto." The first half concludes with Dvořák's grand "New World Symphony" and the romantic tenor classic "O sole mio."
After a 15-minute intermission, the second half begins with the jubilant Chinese piece "Good News From Beijing." A lyrical soprano rendition of "Torna a Surriento" follows, leading into Bizet's passionate "Carmen Suite." The energy continues with Brahms' lively "Hungarian Dance No. 5" and the tender tenor ballad "Non ti scordar di me." The concert then transitions through Shostakovich's elegant "Waltz No. 2," Offenbach's exuberant "Can-Can," and selected dances from Tchaikovsky's "Nutcracker," ending on a delightfully cheerful note with Johann Strauss Jr.'s "Tritsch-Tratsch Polka."
