Flat caps, shadowy streets and a pulse of rock music return to life on stage as The Redemption of Thomas Shelby, the official dance theatre adaptation of the BBC series Peaky Blinders, arrives at Guangzhou Opera House from March 14 to 15 as part of its China tour.
The production transforms the television phenomenon into a two-hour contemporary dance work, retelling the story of Birmingham gang leader Thomas Shelby through movement, live music and immersive stage design. Rather than dialogue, choreography drives the narrative, revealing themes of war trauma, love and redemption at the heart of the story.
Performed by the original touring cast of Rambert, one of Britain's leading contemporary dance companies founded in 1926, the show features principal dancers Guillaume Quéau and Conor Kerrigan alternating as Shelby, alongside Naya Lovell as Grace.

Developed with involvement from series creator Steven Knight, the stage adaptation introduces new emotional perspectives while preserving the drama's signature atmosphere. A live band performs music from the series, including its iconic theme "Red Right Hand." Following sold-out performances in the UK and a strong audience response in Shenzhen, the production now brings its cinematic energy to audiences in Guangzhou.

Dance-theater production: Deep in Memory (international version)
舞劇《記憶深處》國際版
Deep in Memory traces the 1937 Nanjing Massacre through the lens of Chinese-American writer Iris Chang (张纯如). The production weaves together the memories of witnesses and survivors around themes of massacre, witnessing, remorse, and denial. Seen through the eyes of figures like John Rabe, Minnie Vautrin, and Japanese soldier Higashishirō, it highlights courage, compassion, and resilience and reflects the suffering and conscience of those caught in one of history's darkest moments.
Directed by Tong Ruirui, this international edition brings together dancers from China, the U.S., Germany, and Japan. Each performer adds their own perspective, blending modern dance with narrative storytelling to make history vivid and emotionally engaging, while amplifying the production's universal message of hope and peace.
Since its premiere, the drama has toured widely across China and internationally. Key performances include a historic run in Paris, France in 2025, marking the first full Chinese contemporary dance drama staged in the French capital.
