"The Present Beyond Time" to bring Chen Jialing's seven-decade artistic journey to Guangzhou
From lotus flowers on paper to colorful porcelain and Chinese silk tapestry, nearly 90-year-old artist Chen Jialing has spent a lifetime exploring how traditional Chinese ink painting can speak to the present.

An exhibition tracing that journey will open on September 24 at the Guangdong Museum of Art (Baietan). "The Present Beyond Time: Chen Jialing Art Exhibition" will bring together works spanning the artist's long career, offering audiences an introduction to one of the leading figures of the New Shanghai School (Haipai) of ink painting.
The Guangzhou exhibition is organized into six sections: Roaming the Mountains, New Rhythms, Seeing the True Nature, Forceful Brushstrokes, Beyond the Image and Returning to the Vessel. They present Chen's artistic exploration from brushwork and visual form to his broader reflections on art and Eastern philosophy.

Made in Guangzhou, known as the Manila Shawl: How Chinese embroidery traveled the world
A shawl made in Guangzhou, shipped across the Pacific and embraced by European society, may sound like an unusual chapter in the history of fashion. But more than a century ago, this was part of a thriving international trade network connecting southern China with the wider world.

That story is now being revisited at Guangzhou Museum, where the exhibition "Glamours on Shoulders: Chinese Cloud Collars and Manila Shawls" runs through December 13. The exhibition brings together traditional Chinese cloud collars (Yunjian), Cantonese-embroidered Manila shawls and late Qing Dynasty design drafts, offering a glimpse into how Chinese craftsmanship and aesthetics traveled far beyond China.
The exhibition even includes a portrait print of Alice Lee Roosevelt Longworth, the eldest daughter of U.S. President Theodore Roosevelt, alongside a shawl similar to the one depicted in the portrait.
Free Mid-Autumn event to light up Guangzhou Music Park from Sept. 25
A Mid-Autumn-themed event will be held at Guangzhou Music Park (广东奥体中心南广场广州音乐公园) from September 25 to September 27, offering free admission and a mix of traditional culture, music, performances and food. The venue is easily accessible via Metro Line 4 or Line 21, with direct access from Exit D of Huangcun Station.

The three-day program will feature different highlights each day. On September 25, the opening day will include interactions with performers in traditional attire, Chinese folk music performances and a lantern and hanfu parade, along with a traditional moon-welcoming ceremony. A giant 1.2-meter mooncake will be unveiled for people to share. The intangible cultural heritage lantern performance "The Celestial Maiden Scattering Flowers" and a hanfu disco party will also be staged.
On September 26, the program will continue with performances, a hanfu parade and Mid-Autumn-themed singing activities.
On September 27, the program will feature more interactions with performers in traditional attire and cultural performances, followed by another performance of "The Celestial Maiden Scattering Flowers" and a hanfu disco party in the evening, bringing the three-day celebration to a festive close.
New LED light show illuminates Guangzhou's Pearl River
The LED mesh screens on the east side of Guangzhou's Jiefang Bridge (广州解放大桥) have recently been put into operation, adding a new visual attraction to the city's riverside skyline.
As night falls, colorful light displays sweep across the bridge's three arches, featuring Lingnan cultural elements such as kapok flowers, Canton embroidery and traditional Cantonese fans.

Covering about 1,140 square meters in total, the LED mesh screens feature high-density digitally controlled point light sources for smooth, high-definition 3D animation displays. Designed to follow the curves of the bridge arches, they integrate with the bridge structure and its existing lighting system.
The screens showcase a variety of themed visuals, from cultural short films to messages such as "Jiefang Bridge," "Welcome to Guangzhou" and "I Love Guangzhou." Scenes featuring local life, including Lingnan-style breakfasts and traditional qilou (arcaded buildings), also highlight the city's distinctive character.
The displays currently run daily from 7 p.m. to 10:30 p.m., inviting the public to experience a new light show along the Pearl River.

As the Mid-Autumn Festival approaches, fish-shaped lanterns illuminate Guangxiao Road in Guangzhou, adding a warm and festive atmosphere to the city.
