Founded in 1958, the Guangdong Science and Technology Library is China's only standalone provincial public library devoted to science and technology, and the largest provider of scientific and technical information services in South China.
The library holds more than 1.49 million printed books and journals and offers access to 182 Chinese and international scientific databases. Services include book lending, document delivery, newspapers and periodicals, free study spaces, e-books and e-journals, science outreach programs, and exhibitions.
Library card registration
Foreign nationals can apply for a library card with a passport or other valid ID.
Required:
■ Valid identification, such as a passport
■ A digital photo, taken free of charge on site
■ A deposit of either 100 or 200 yuan
Borrowing privileges
200 yuan deposit: Up to 15 books at a time, of which three may be foreign-language titles.
Loan period: 45 days.
100 yuan deposit: Up to 10 books at a time, of which two may be foreign-language titles.
Loan period: 30 days.
Books may be renewed once, extending the loan by 30 days from the original due date. Overdue books cannot be renewed.
Overdue charge: 0.1 yuan per item per day.
No card is needed to read books, newspapers, and magazines in the reading rooms. Periodicals and reference works may not be taken out.
Foreign-language collection
Foreign-language books are shelved in the Science and Technology Reading Room on the fifth floor, where readers can either borrow them or read them on site.
Children's collection
The Children's Science Reading Room on the third floor stocks picture books and popular science titles in Chinese and English. All children's books are part of Guangzhou's citywide borrow-and-return network, so they can be returned at any participating library.

Opening hours: Wednesday to Sunday, 9 a.m.-5 p.m. (closed Mondays and Tuesdays). Public holiday hours are announced separately.
