Rediscover Shenzhen by bike: 3 scenic routes to ride now

There is no better way to rediscover Shenzhen than on two wheels on a clear, breezy day. By the end of August this year, the city had built more than 200 kilometers of leisure bike paths, letting riding enthusiasts glide through the "mountain-sea" scenery. Here are three healing, picturesque routes to try when the weather is fine.

SZ Bay coastal ride: SZ Bay Park — K11 ECOAST

The 16-kilometer classic delivers salty sea air, skyline views and a string of parks connected by an easy, well-maintained, comfortable path, making it perfect for families with children. The route links Shenzhen Bay Park, Shenzhen Talent Park, Houhai Zhongxin River Park and Nyuwa Seaside Park, offering a variety of waterfront landscapes for photo stops. Don't miss the Crescent Valley, the Sunrise Theater and the lighthouse, which are super Instagram-worthy.

Rest stations are spaced along the route for families and casual riders. Finish with a chilled end at K11 ECOAST for a bite and a coffee.

Luotian Forest Park: Shenlin Road single-direction loop

Extending approximately 10 kilometers, this route offers a true mountain-trail experience in Shenzhen. With tight turns and steep climbs, this riding path is best suitable to more experienced riders.

The park has three main entrances — south, east and west — that connect to surrounding municipal roads at Yanluo Subdistrict and the Songshan Lake in Dongguan City, as well as regional greenways. Apart from the one-way Shenlin Road circuit, there are two two-way roads: Fenglin West Road and Fenglin East Road. Expect significant elevation changes, sharp bends and sections that overlap with the hiking paths.

Speed limits are enforced here: 15 km/h on Shenlin Road and 10 km/h on the Fenglin West and Fenglin East Roads. Wear a helmet, control your speed on descents, and be ready to slow down for hikers. Yueliang Lake and Zhiqing Forest are scenic spots worth stopping at. Facilities such as toilets and vending machines are available at several points.

Opening hours: 6 a.m.-7 p.m.

Yantian greenway: Yantian Seafood Street — Dameisha Beach Park

This compact route packs variety: cliffside viewpoints overlooking the container port, wooden boardwalks by the rocks, and long sea vistas at Dameisha. Be prepared for some steep stretches along the 6-kilometer greenway. Viewing platforms let you stop and watch waves crash on the rocks. On a breezy turn you'll feel the heat swept away and the view open up. Bring water and sun protection.

Practical tips for all riding paths:

Best time: Early morning or late afternoon for cooler temperatures and softer light.

Safety: Wear a helmet, use lights for low-light rides, and stay alert on shared paths.

Essentials: Water, a basic repair kit, and a phone with navigation. Some sections have vending machines or rest stops; others are more remote.

Etiquette: Keep to posted speed limits, yield to pedestrians, and be mindful of local signage.

Whether you want a relaxed seaside spin, a forest challenge, or a quick coastal escape, Shenzhen's expanding network of leisure bike paths makes it easy. Pick a clear day, hop on your bike and let the city reveal itself one ride at a time.
