Strolling along Zhonghua Road's old street in Chikan District, Zhanjiang, in south China's Guangdong Province, the gentle winter sun illuminates Ningyuan, a historic building adorned with a vibrant cascade of orange-red firecracker flowers. Blooming along the vines, the flowers turn the century-old house into a festive spectacle.

Built in 1942, Ningyuan blends Chinese and Western architectural styles. Each winter, the bright blooms contrast with the weathered walls, drawing residents and visitors to stop, take photos, and enjoy the warmth and charm of this historic site.

Native to South America, the firecracker flower—named for its resemblance to strings of firecrackers—has become a popular ornamental plant in southern China. Blooming from December to April, it reaches its peak around the Chinese New Year, bringing vibrant color and life to the old street and historic architecture.
