Autumn harvest in Guangzhou's countryside makes the National Day holiday a good time to head beyond the city centre and explore its orchards and villages.
Here are some places to consider during the holiday.
Baiyun: pomelos, guavas and figs
Pomelos
Xiongwei Village is known for a variety of seasonal fruits, including a distinctive Thai Ruby pomelo that has been cultivated locally for several years.
The fruit has green skin even when ripe and typically weighs 1.5-3 kg. Its flesh is ruby-red, sweet and juicy. September and October are the best months for tasting and picking, with the season expected to continue into November.

Panyu: grapes and dragon fruit on an island
For a more leisurely countryside escape, head to Dadaosha Island in Panyu, where vineyards and fruit orchards sit alongside the river.
At Before Sunset Picking Garden (日落之前采摘园) beside Lianyiandao Road in Dadaosha Village, around 60,000 m² of grape greenhouses are currently producing Sunshine Muscat grapes. Another 20,000 m² is planted with red-fleshed dragon fruit, while figs and passion fruits grow along the pathways.
The orchard is adjacent to a 100-mu (about 6.67 hectares) campsite, giving families the option of combining fruit picking with camping and sunset views over the river.

The village has become one of Conghua's popular autumn destinations, while the nearby Luodong area combines persimmon orchards with the Luodong Artisan Town, rice-field scenery and traditional craft experiences. Local cafés have also introduced seasonal products such as persimmon coffee and persimmon ice cream.

Zengcheng: golden passion fruit in harvest through December
At Xianhu Agricultural Family Farm in Yuehu Village, Xiancun Town, golden passion fruits are now in peak harvest, and the picking season is expected to continue until December, giving visitors a longer window to experience the harvest.
The farm uses organic fertiliser and organic liquid nutrients during cultivation. Freshly picked fruit can be left to ripen briefly, developing a deeper golden colour and a sweeter flavour.
