Summer is one of the best times to tour Guangdong. From misty mountains and scenic coastlines to historic towns and dynamic cities, the province offers something for every traveler. Follow this guide as we journey across Guangdong, exploring the destinations, landscapes and local experiences that make summer here unforgettable.
Stop 3: Western Guangdong — A refreshing summer by the sea
With more than 4,100 kilometers of coastline, Guangdong offers endless seaside escapes. From maritime history and island adventures to fishing ports and sunset beaches, western Guangdong is the perfect place to cool off this summer.
Yangjiang
Yangjiang combines maritime heritage with spectacular coastal scenery.
The Maritime Silk Road Museum of Guangdong (广东海上丝绸之路博物馆), one of the world's three major shipwreck museums, showcases the excavation and preservation of the Nanhai No. 1, a Song Dynasty merchant ship that offers a glimpse into China's Maritime Silk Road history.
Just beyond the museum lies Ten-Mile Silver Beach(十里银滩), where soft sand, rolling hills and crystal-clear waters create an idyllic summer setting. Head to Mawei Island (马尾岛) for sea fishing and unforgettable sunsets. On lucky summer nights, you may even witness the "blue tears" phenomenon, when the sea glows with shimmering bioluminescence.
Maoming
For travelers seeking both mountains and the sea, Maoming offers a quieter summer getaway.
Every August, as the South China Sea fishing moratorium comes to an end, hundreds of fishing boats depart from Bohe Fishing Port (博贺渔港), filling the horizon with sails.
Nearby, the Romantic Coast (浪漫海岸) is known for its soft white sand, swaying coconut palms and relaxed seaside atmosphere.
Zhanjiang
Zhanjiang blends coastal landscapes, natural wonders and local flavors.
The millennium-old salt fields (千年海盐田) reflect the sky like giant mirrors, while Nanji Village (南极村) marks the southernmost point of the Chinese mainland.
Near Denglou Cape (灯楼角), don't miss Xuwen County's famous pineapples, known for their sweet, juicy flavor. As evening falls, stroll along Xiashan Fisherman's Wharf (霞山渔人码头) or Jinsha Bay Sea-view Corridor (金沙湾观海长廊) to experience the city's lively waterfront atmosphere.
