This summer, "China Cool" has become a viral buzzword online. While Guangdong is often known for its scorching summer heat, the province offers plenty of ways to stay cool. Visitors can enjoy refreshing escapes in nature, inspiring museum visits, delicious local flavors, vibrant commercial hubs and cutting-edge experiences. In this three-part series, we will explore the cooler side of Guangdong.
Part 1: Summer retreats in nature
In Zhaoqing, Dinghu Mountain (鼎湖山), known as the "Emerald on the Tropic of Cancer," boasts over 95 percent forest cover and a refreshing summer climate. At Feishuitan Waterfall (飞水潭瀑布), the cool mist from the cascading water offers a perfect natural escape.



Nankun Mountain (南昆山) in Huizhou features vast bamboo forests, a mild climate and refreshing breezes. Visitors can hike, camp or follow mountain streams.


For more thrills, head to Qingyuan for whitewater rafting through lush forests at Gulong Gorge (古龙峡) and Huangteng Gorge (黄腾峡). Rushing water, dramatic drops and lush scenery make for an unforgettable adventure.


For a different kind of cool, explore the Lianzhou Underground River (连州地下河), where temperatures stay around 18°C year-round. Cruising through vast karst caverns and marveling at spectacular stalactite formations promises a memorable experience.


Prefer the sea? Guangdong's coastline offers plenty of ways to unwind. Stroll along a sandy beach at dusk, watch the sunset and let the evening breeze cool you down.
