Deep in Maoming's Heweishan Nature Reserve, over 430 rare Purple Paphiopedilums — known as the "pandas of the plant world" — are now in full bloom, their vibrant flowers creating a stunning display amid the lush forest.

This orchid, which thrives in shady, humid broad-leaved forests near streams, is a key indicator of a healthy ecosystem. First recorded in the reserve in 2021 with around 156 plants, its population has now grown to over 430 after nearly four years of conservation and natural propagation, more than doubling and signaling improving local ecological conditions.

The reserve has implemented a scientific protection system, including regular monitoring, enhanced patrolling, and in-depth research, creating a safe environment for the orchids to flourish.

In recent years, Maoming forestry authorities have prioritized ecological conservation, protecting plant resources and cracking down on illegal digging and trade, thereby creating a safe environment for Purple Paphiopedilum and other rare species to thrive.
