A giant, luminous "planet" has begun lighting up the night sky along the Fuxu Ancient Canal (扶胥古运河) in Guangzhou's Huangpu District.
The 16-meter-diameter "Golden Fuxu Pearl (金胥明珠)" is the centerpiece of the upcoming cultural tourism project "Fuxu Twelve Hours (扶胥十二时)", which is expected to open for trial operations in October.
Designed by Guangzhou Leafun Culture Science and Technology Co., Ltd., a subsidiary of a listed display firm Leyard Group, the sphere carries a 563-square-meter screen. It is Guangdong's first outdoor ultra-HD spherical screen and a work of public art that stands out along the canal. The project aims to revitalize the thousand-year-old waterway of the Maritime Silk Road by integrating visual technology with local heritage.
The project is currently in its final light-testing phase but has already caught the public's attention. Eager residents and photography enthusiasts have gathered along the banks to capture early previews of the light shows, and photos have circulated widely on social media.
Stepping onto the canal walkway at night, visitors see the silver-white sphere come to life with ultra-HD imagery — from sea waves to animated sequences — casting vivid reflections on the water. The structure appears as a glowing planet floating above the waterfront.
