According to meteorological forecasts for the next week, while occasional light rain is possible in some areas, no significant rainfall is on the immediate horizon. Daytime highs are expected to consistently remain at or above the 27°C mark.
This surge in temperature has led some netizens to question if the city has already transitioned into summer.
However, meteorological definitions provide a clearer picture. Climatologically, the start of summer is determined by a rolling average temperature remaining at or above 22°C for five consecutive days. Currently, Guangzhou is only experiencing daily maximum temperatures exceeding this threshold, not sustained averages. Historically, the average date for Guangzhou's seasonal shift to summer is mid-April.
The high-pressure system that had been cooling South China is weakening today (March 16), leading to a general rise in temperatures across the province, with increasing cloud cover in the western areas. From March 17 to 18, the influence of southerly airflows will bring mostly cloudy and overcast conditions to much of Guangdong, with light fog in the mornings and the possibility of scattered light rain in some cities and counties.
Detailed Guangdong forecast:
March 16: Western cities and counties will be mostly cloudy, while the rest of the province enjoys sunny to clear skies. Morning lows: 9-12°C in northern Qingyuan, Shaoguan, Heyuan, Meizhou, Huizhou, and eastern Guangdong; 17-20°C in the Pearl River Estuary and western Guangdong coastal areas; 13-16°C for most other regions.
March 17: Central and western Guangdong will see mostly cloudy to overcast conditions with light fog in the morning and possible isolated light rain. The rest of the province will transition from sunny to cloudy. Morning lows: 11-15°C in northern Guangdong, northern and western Pearl River Delta, and eastern Guangdong; 16-20°C elsewhere.
March 18: Northern Guangdong cities and counties will be cloudy to overcast with scattered light rain. The rest of the province will be mostly cloudy to overcast, with possible isolated light rain. Most areas will experience light fog in the morning. Morning lows: 14-17°C in northern Guangdong, northern and western Pearl River Delta, and eastern Guangdong; 17-21°C elsewhere.
