Guangdong to see thunderstorms after days of intense heat

After days of scorching weather across Guangdong Province, thunderstorms are expected to become more active from May 30 to 31, bringing a slight drop in temperatures.

On May 28, Guangzhou recorded the city's highest temperature at 41.6°C. Hot and sunny conditions persisted across Guangdong on May 29, and a weak cold air mass is expected to bring more active thunderstorms over the weekend.

According to the provincial meteorological observatory, southern Guangdong and the central Pearl River Delta will see cloudy skies with showers and thunderstorms from May 30 to 31, with heavy downpours expected in localized areas. Other parts of the province will remain mostly cloudy to sunny with isolated thunderstorms. Maximum temperatures are expected to range from 33°C to 35°C across the mid-to-northern Pearl River Delta and western Guangdong, and 29°C to 32°C elsewhere. Humid conditions are expected to persist despite the slight cooling.

Meanwhile, Typhoon Jangmi, the sixth typhoon of the year, formed over the northwestern Pacific Ocean on May 27. Current forecasts show it moving toward waters east of Taiwan, making a direct impact on Guangdong unlikely. However, meteorologists noted that the typhoon's development could influence moisture transport, potentially affecting the scale and intensity of the upcoming thunderstorms in the province.
