Guangdong braces for wet cold snap as typhoon, cold front converge

Guangdong Province is set to see a sharp drop in temperatures later this month, with forecasters warning that the combined effects of a tropical cyclone and cold air could bring an uncomfortable, damp chill to parts of the province.

According to the Guangzhou Meteorological Observatory, the city will see mainly sunny to cloudy weather on October 19 and October 20. A weak cold front will arrive on October 21, bringing a slight dip in temperatures with little noticeable impact. But a more significant cooldown is expected from October 25, when the residual circulation of a tropical cyclone may interact with cold air, causing temperatures in Guangzhou to fall markedly.

The tropical cyclone in question is Super Typhoon Champi, currently moving northwest. Its subsequent track remains highly uncertain. Meteorological authorities say major forecasting models are divided between two scenarios: continuing westward toward Fujian or turning northward. The combination of cold air and the typhoon could bring significant cooling and a damp, uncomfortable chill.

At the provincial level, the Guangdong Meteorological Observatory forecasts mostly cloudy to sunny weather across the province on October 19 and October 20, with scattered showers in some cities and counties in western Guangdong.

A new weak cold front will affect northern Guangdong on the night of October 20, reach the Guangzhou urban area on the morning of October 21, and sweep across southern coastal cities and counties from the afternoon into the night. Under its influence, scattered showers are expected in some southern areas. Average daily temperatures are forecast to drop by 2–5°C in central and northern parts of the province, and by 1–2°C in southern coastal areas. Winds over the central and eastern waters of Guangdong will strengthen to Force 6–7, with gusts reaching Force 8, from the afternoon to the night of October 21.
