New typhoon expected to bring strong winds and rain to Guangdong

A new tropical cyclone developed in the Pacific on September 16 and is expected to bring heavy rains as it moves toward Guangdong.

At 5:00 p.m. on September 16, a tropical depression formed in the Philippine Sea, about 290 kilometers northeast of Manila, Philippines. This tropical depression is expected to strengthen as it moves northwestward and could become the seventeenth typhoon, named Mitag, if it evolves into a tropical storm. According to the latest forecast, this typhoon, with winds reaching Beaufort scale 11, may bring strong winds and heavy rain to Guangdong.

Before the typhoon's impact, high temperatures will persist across many parts of Guangdong. During the daytime on September 16, maximum temperatures in eastern Guangdong and Meizhou increased by 1–2°C compared with September 15, with Jiaoling in Meizhou recording the highest temperature in the province at 37.5°C.

The Guangdong Meteorological Observatory forecasts that from September 17 to 18, central and northern Guangdong will be sunny to partly cloudy with hot weather, and local (thunder) showers may occur. Meanwhile, (thunder) showers will increase in the southern cities and counties, with some areas experiencing heavy rainfall. By the 19th, under the influence of the tropical system, eastern Guangdong will see cloudy skies transitioning to moderate to heavy rain, with some areas experiencing torrential downpours, while the remaining cities and counties may have (thunder) showers with isolated heavy rain.

On September 17, cities and counties in central and northern Guangdong will be sunny to partly cloudy, with local (thunder) showers. On the Leizhou Peninsula, conditions will be partly cloudy to overcast, with moderate (thunder) showers and isolated heavy rain. The remaining cities and counties will be partly cloudy, with scattered (thunder) showers.

On September 18, Shaoguan, Qingyuan, and the coastal cities and counties of southern Guangdong will be partly cloudy, with scattered (thunder) showers. The remaining cities and counties will be sunny to partly cloudy, with local (thunder) showers.

On September 19, cities and counties in eastern Guangdong will be partly cloudy, transitioning to moderate to heavy rain with isolated heavy rain. The remaining cities and counties will be partly cloudy, with (thunder) showers and isolated heavy rain.
