Guangdong was once again gripped by persistent rain over the weekend. Showers kept catching people off guard, making umbrellas essential for anyone stepping out.
Rainstorm alert still in effect
At 6 a.m. on July 20, the National Meteorological Center kept its blue rainstorm warning in effect. From 8 a.m. on July 20 to 8 a.m. on July 21, heavy to torrential rain is expected in parts of western and northern Guangdong. These areas may also experience short-duration heavy rainfall (20–50 mm per hour, locally exceeding 80 mm), along with thunderstorms, gales, or hail.
When will the rain stop?
Here's the good news: from July 22 onward, the rain will gradually weaken across Guangdong, and hotter weather will take its place.
Provincial forecast:
July 20–21: Cities and counties in central and western Guangdong will experience moderate to heavy thunderstorms, with localized downpours. The southern coastal areas will be cloudy with moderate thunderstorms and locally heavy rain. Other areas will be cloudy with scattered showers. Highs: 32–35°C in Leizhou Peninsula, Heyuan, Meizhou, and parts of the Pearl River Delta; 29–32°C elsewhere.
July 22: Central and western Guangdong will be cloudy to overcast with thunderstorms and locally heavy rain; other regions will be cloudy with isolated showers. Highs: 33–36°C in Meizhou, Heyuan, Leizhou Peninsula, and parts of the Pearl River Delta; 30–33°C elsewhere.
Guangzhou forecast:
According to the Guangzhou Meteorological Observatory, frequent thunderstorms are expected on July 20–21 as unstable atmospheric conditions persist along the edge of the subtropical high, with localized heavy downpours. By July 22, the rain will ease, and the heat will start to build. From July 23 onward, the rain is expected to stop, with temperatures climbing to 35°C.
