Data Explorer | Construction begins on Guangzhou new airport project

Construction of the Guangzhou new airport project began on March 25 at Gaoming, a site about 60 km southwest of central Guangzhou and within an hour's drive of major cities, including central Foshan, Zhaoqing, and Jiangmen. The project is aimed at expanding capacity and improving balance within the Guangdong–Hong Kong–Macao Greater Bay Area's aviation network.

The first phase, with a total investment of RMB 418.08 billion, will include two parallel runways, a 260,000-square-metre terminal, and 94 aircraft stands. Once complete, the airport is expected to handle 30 million passengers annually, along with 500,000 tonnes of cargo and 260,000 aircraft movements.

The airport will primarily serve the west bank of the Pearl River, covering the Guangzhou-Foshan-Zhaoqing region and surrounding areas with a population of over 20 million. It is intended to complement Guangzhou Baiyun International Airport through differentiated route planning and shared hub functions.

The project will also integrate with regional transport infrastructure, including high-speed rail lines such as Guangzhou-Zhanjiang, Shenzhen-Nanning and Zhuhai-Zhaoqing, alongside an expanded expressway network, enabling direct air-rail transfers within the terminal complex.

Authorities say the project is part of Guangdong's broader plan to develop a coordinated, multi-airport system across the Greater Bay Area.
