Chinese contemporary dance production MindScape concluded its U.S. tour with a four-day run at Lincoln Center for the Performing Arts, bringing a blend of Eastern philosophy and contemporary movement to international audiences during the Chinese Arts Week, part of the center's Summer for the City festival.
Co-created by the Guangdong Modern Dance Company and Shen Wei Dance Arts, MindScape was performed nightly from July 22 to 25. The production marked the final stop of the tour, following its successful North American premiere at the American Dance Festival in Durham, North Carolina.
The tour is one of Guangdong's key international cultural exchange projects, showcasing the province's contemporary performing arts at two of the United States' most influential dance platforms.
At Lincoln Center, MindScape stood out as the only production in the festival's Chinese Arts Week program to feature both Chinese and international dancers. Set in an open-air performance space, the production attracted audiences from around the world, including local residents, tourists, dance professionals and art enthusiasts.
Inspired by traditional Chinese philosophy, MindScape combines contemporary dance with live music and minimalist stage design to explore the relationship between humanity and nature. Through expressive movement rather than dialogue, the performance offers international audiences a glimpse into the quiet, reflective qualities of Chinese aesthetics and Lingnan's contemporary artistic spirit.
Many audience members stayed after the performances to speak with the director and dancers, sharing their interpretations of the work and asking about its creative process. Some said the production reflected the choreographers' artistic journey across Eastern and Western cultures, while others praised the chemistry among the members of the multinational cast, describing it as a powerful example of cultural exchange through dance.
Li Pianpian, deputy general manager of the Guangdong Modern Dance Company and leader of the tour, said the U.S. performances exceeded expectations. "The most encouraging part of the tour was the sustained interest from audiences," Li said. "At both venues, many people chose to stay after the performances to discuss the artistic ideas behind the work and to learn more about the Guangdong Modern Dance Company. These conversations showed us the potential for deeper international artistic collaboration in the future."
Founded in 1992, the Guangdong Modern Dance Company is China's first professional contemporary dance company. Over the past three decades, it has developed original productions that reinterpret Chinese culture through contemporary movement while building partnerships with artists and institutions around the world.
Following the successful U.S. tour, the company said it will continue to create works that combine Chinese cultural traditions, Lingnan artistic identity and an international perspective, with the goal of bringing more original Chinese contemporary dance to audiences worldwide.
