Eight operas share stage at Spring Festival Gala in Shanwei

A Spring Festival Opera Gala, titled "Flourishing Garden • Drama Gathering in Haifeng," was held on February 13 at the Haifeng County Theater in Shanwei City, south China's Guangdong Province.

The event brought together three rare national-level operas native to the Hailufeng region (Haifeng and Lufeng)—Zhengzi Opera (正字戏), Xiqin Opera (西秦戏), and Baizi Opera (白字戏)—all acclaimed as "living fossils of Chinese opera." Joining them were five other prestigious styles: Kunqu Opera (昆曲), Yueju Opera (粤剧), Chaoju Opera (潮剧), Hanju Opera(汉剧), and Huazhaoxi Opera (花朝戏).

The gala featured classic repertoire performed by veteran, mid-career, and young artists, showcasing unique local vocal techniques and acrobatic skills like "armchair kung fu." The eight troupes shared the stage, presenting a diverse tapestry of Chinese theatrical arts. The evening celebrated local traditions while fostering cross-regional cultural dialogue, enriching the Spring Festival holiday with a vibrant display of intangible cultural heritage.
