Huazhou villages in Maoming brew a vibrant cultural revival

Villages in Huazhou, Maoming (Guangdong) are experiencing a cultural revival, as new public spaces and community initiatives breathe fresh life into this once-quiet corner of southern China. In Yaoyong Village, a local resident proudly introduces the new "Joyful Reading Space," where neighbors now gather for books and meaningful conversations.

This cultural transformation extends across the county-level city, with Xintang Village—known as the "Fruit Village"—standing out as a success story. Fruit-themed museums, cycling paths, and homestays now attract urban visitors and bring locals together. "Our cultural matrix has become the spiritual home for all residents," says Party Secretary Peng Ziling.

Huazhou's growing cultural infrastructure now features 379 rural libraries, 30 specialized cultural spaces, and 392 community centers hosting a wide range of activities—from traditional painting workshops led by renowned artist Dong Biqing to village basketball tournaments and original song performances. Innovative programs like the "Civilized Village Broadcast" deliver daily cultural content via 369 village loudspeakers.

Environmental awareness is rising alongside cultural development in Huazhou, where couples now plant commemorative trees instead of holding lavish weddings—a practice that greens the countryside and reduces wasteful spending. The impact is visible: 28,000 mini-gardens and 5,057 model courtyards now enhance village landscapes, and two communities have earned "National Civilized Village" honors this year.
