Hakka culture from Meizhou City, Guangdong Province, was featured at the 24th Washington Chinese Culture Festival near Capitol Hill on August 29, bringing these traditions to international audiences.
The Meizhou Hakka exhibition area showcased local specialties, including Changle liquor (长乐烧酒), colorful Chinese calligraphy (中国彩书) and Nankou Aidoufang dried tofu (南口艾豆坊豆干). Complemented by cultural performances, the exhibition presented the deep roots and charm of Hakka traditions.
Making their debut on the international stage, singers Chen Shanbao, Li Jiani and He Yusen performed Hakka-style pieces. Their repertoire included the Sino-U.S. friendship song "Echoes of the East" (《东方回响》), the patriotic classic "China" (《中国》), the folk song "Hakka Yangming" (《客家扬名》) and "Hakka" (《客家》), the theme song of the World Hakka Conference. The original track "Echoes of the East," composed by Chen Shanbao and accompanied by a music video produced by the team of Meizhou director Jiang Xuanhua, received warm praise from attendees.
At the end of the event, the organizing committee presented the three singers and Jiang Xuanhua with certificates honoring them as "Sino-U.S. Cultural Friendship Ambassadors." The award recognized their artistic contributions and efforts in promoting Hakka culture through cultural exchange.
