A shipment of high-grade copper foil from landlocked Meizhou City has reached Malaysia through an innovative logistics route, signaling a strategic shift for manufacturers in China's mountainous regions. The cargo cleared customs at the Meizhou Comprehensive Bonded Zone before traveling 200 km by road to Shantou's Guangao Port.
For decades, Meizhou—a production hub for copper foil, rubber tires, and electronics—relied solely on overland transport to distant Pearl River Delta ports. The new "Meizhou-Shantou Express" corridor reduces transit time and cuts expenses by leveraging shorter land distances and streamlined customs procedures.
The breakthrough stems from coordinated efforts between Shantou Port operator China Merchants, Meizhou customs authorities, and logistics firm COSCO. Key innovations include a unified digital clearance system that reduces cargo processing from days to hours and optimized truck routes for weight-sensitive goods. Cost reductions were achieved by consolidating shipments and eliminating fees that were previously incurred at congested Pearl River Delta ports.
