From April 3 to 5 in Kuala Lumpur, the Guangdong-Macao In-Depth Cooperation Zone in Hengqin joined Macao at the Malaysia's International Travel Fair to promote multi-destination tourism products aimed at Southeast Asian travelers, as both sides sought to expand their regional reach.
Exhibiting at the Malaysia International Trade and Exhibition Centre (MITEC), the Hengqin delegation was positioned alongside Macao, highlighting cross-border itineraries designed to encourage visitors to experience both destinations within a single trip.
The MATTA Fair, organized by the Malaysian Association of Tour & Travel Agents (MATTA), is the country's largest consumer travel exhibition, drawing hundreds of exhibitors and tens of thousands of visitors each year.
At the event, Hengqin promoted a broad mix of tourism offerings, including theme parks, wellness and leisure resorts, eco-tourism and the meetings and exhibitions sector. The showcase formed part of a joint effort with Macao's tourism authorities to package and market integrated travel experiences to Southeast Asian consumers.
During the fair, representatives from Hengqin held discussions with the MATTA, building on previous exchanges between the two sides. A Malaysian industry delegation visited Hengqin last year to seek for key tourism projects and cooperation opportunities.
Meetings were also held with local travel agencies and airline representatives to explore joint promotions and product development. Talks focused on improving connectivity through Macao International Airport, with the aim of funneling more Southeast Asian visitors onward to Hengqin.
Official data shows that nearly 140,000 foreign visitors entered Hengqin through its port of entry in 2025, representing a year-on-year increase of about 90%. Travelers from Thailand and Malaysia were among the largest source markets, underscoring the region's growing importance for inbound tourism.
