Guangdong's Chikungunya remains stable, yet risks lurk for vulnerable groups

From August 17 to 23, a total of 336 new locally transmitted cases of Chikungunya fever were reported in Guangdong, with no severe or fatal cases.

The cases were distributed as follows: 206 in Foshan, 62 in Guangzhou, 15 in Zhanjiang, 13 in Chaozhou, 9 in Shenzhen, 8 in Heyuan, 6 in Huizhou, 5 in Dongguan, 3 each in Zhuhai and Yangjiang, 2 in Shaoguan, and 1 each in Jiangmen, Maoming, Meizhou, and Jieyang.

Kang Min, director of the Institute of Infectious Disease Prevention and Control at the Guangdong Provincial Center for Disease Control and Prevention, stated that various regions in the province have consistently carried out prevention and control efforts aimed at reducing mosquito vector density. The recent epidemic situation remains generally stable, with cases primarily being sporadic.

What should patients pay attention to during recovery?

Chen Zhihai, director of the Infectious Disease Center of Beijing Ditan Hospital, emphasized that special attention should be given to elderly patients over 90 years old who have underlying conditions such as coronary heart disease, hypertension, and diabetes.

In addition to the elderly and infants under one year of age, if a pregnant woman is infected and develops symptoms shortly before delivery, the newborn may contract the virus during childbirth. No such cases have been reported in Foshan so far.

According to current research, the Chikungunya virus has only one serotype, which means that after being infected once, a person generally will not be infected again.

Do mosquitoes have resistance to insecticides?

Recently, a study reported that gene testing conducted on samples of Aedes albopictus collected in Guangzhou revealed that the relevant specimens carry mutations conferring resistance to pyrethroid insecticides.

Experts noted that although mosquitoes have developed resistance to certain insecticides, targeted measures have been implemented. The currently used insecticides have undergone efficacy evaluations and have been confirmed to be effective.
