A dialogue on innovative models of care in emergency medicine took place at the First Affiliated Hospital of Sun Yat-sen University (FAH-SYSU) on March 30, bringing together experts from FAH-SYSU and Mass General Brigham-one of the world's leading academic healthcare systems, known for its integrated approach to clinical care, research, and education.
"From my experience, Guangzhou is a very welcoming and open city, and it has a solid foundation for developing international medical services," said Eunice Charles, Consultant at Mass General Brigham International on the occasion.
"Because they provide care across many specialties, patients can access all their care needs within one system, so they don't have to go to different providers to receive care." She noted, "For example, FAH-SYSU has an international patient center, which shows they are already considering how to serve this population while also removing any language barriers."

Luis Lobón, Vice President at Mass General Brigham International, noted Emergency medicine is evolving beyond the hospital walls, with the next frontier focused on extending urgent care into communities and bridging care settings to create a more connected, responsive system of care.
He emphasized the importance of collaboration in advancing medical services and sharing best practices.. "Looking ahead, we see strong potential to expand our collaboration in the emergency medicine into the communities," he said. "We are maintaining an open, ongoing dialogue to explore the next wave of collaboration."
Chris Liu, Engagement Director at Mass General Brigham International, highlighted the depth of teamwork. "We bring our experts to Guangzhou, and we also welcome experts from Guangzhou to Boston for mutual learning. Our goal is to co-develop sustainable models that create long-term value beyond a single initiative or project."
Since 2021, FAH-SYSU and Mass General Brigham have launched specialty-to-specialty collaborations, initiating a series of cooperative projects including the development of emergency medicine & urgent care service line.
