Marking World Glaucoma Week (March 8-14), the Zhongshan Ophthalmic Center of Sun Yat-sen University launched a series of public outreach initiatives to raise awareness of glaucoma prevention and treatment.
On March 14, the center's volunteer team will deliver AI-assisted eye screening services at Dafu Mountain Forest Park in Guangzhou, using smart diagnostic tools to improve early risk identification.

On March 11, glaucoma specialists offered free consultations at the center's Zhujiang New Town campus, providing guidance on early detection and long-term management.
Experts advise individuals with a family history of glaucoma and other high-risk groups to undergo annual eye examinations to prevent irreversible vision loss.

In a milestone for Chinese ophthalmology, research led by Professor Zhang Xiulan on combined cataract-glaucoma surgery was cited in the 2026 Preferred Practice Pattern guidelines for primary angle-closure disease issued by the American Academy of Ophthalmology (AAO). This marks the first time a surgical approach developed in China for primary angle-closure glaucoma has been incorporated into the AAO's authoritative clinical guidance.
The center has announced progress in pharmaceutical innovation. A newly developed anti-glaucoma drug has entered clinical trials, breaking longstanding international monopolies in the field. Researchers say the treatment has demonstrated promising efficacy and could become a more affordable option for patients in the future.
