A new initiative aimed at strengthening the training and employment prospects of students majoring in Portuguese and Spanish was officially signed on April 26 within the Guangdong-Macao In-Depth Cooperation Zone in Hengqin. This initiative was led by the China-Portuguese (Spanish) Speaking Countries Economic and Trade Service Center.
The agreement brings together universities from both the Chinese mainland and Macao, alongside government agencies and private companies, in response to the growing demand for graduates who possess both language proficiency and professional expertise. Participating institutions include Beijing Foreign Studies University, Shanghai International Studies University, and Macau University of Science and Technology.

According to officials, the initiative is designed to foster closer ties between education and industry, expand access to internship opportunities, and leverage Hengqin's policy support to attract and nurture international talent.
Companies such as DiDi Global also joined the initiative, noting that employers are increasingly seeking candidates who not only understand both languages and local market dynamics but are also proficient in digital tools, including artificial intelligence.
As part of the plan, a new internship scheme for young people from Macao will offer placements with companies engaged in trade with Portuguese- and Spanish-speaking countries. The initiative includes financial support covering accommodation, transportation, and insurance.
