Sweet autumn escape: Persimmon picking in Guangzhou

Autumn paints the hills of Conghua District in Guangzhou in shades of orange and red as persimmons ripen on the branches. Across several villages and towns, visitors can wander through orchards, admire the colorful fruit and pick fresh persimmons straight from the trees.

With the 140th Canton Fair underway in the city, international buyers and exhibitors can take a break from business and head into the countryside for a taste of Guangzhou's autumn harvest.

Shangluo Village, Jiangpu Subdistrict

With a persimmon-growing history of more than 300 years, Shangluo Village (上罗村) is one of Conghua's best-known destinations for autumn scenery and fruit picking. Around 300 hectares of persimmon trees stretch from the foot of the hills up their slopes, creating a striking seasonal landscape.

Several orchards welcome visitors for sightseeing and picking. A short walk along the hillside paths leads to rows of trees laden with bright fruit. The village is also part of Luodong Craftsman Town, where visitors can explore rural scenery and traditional crafts, or try seasonal persimmon-flavored coffee and ice cream at local cafés.

Recommended orchards: Dalanshu Persimmon Orchard (大榄树柿园), Kaixinguo Persimmon Orchard (开心果柿园), Hepan Renjia Persimmon Orchard (河畔人家柿子园) and Tianyuan Qiu Shi (田园秋柿).

Tickets: Search for the WeChat Mini Program "上罗红柿" to access the ticketing platform. A promotional experience ticket priced at 9.8 yuan is available for participating orchards and can be redeemed through December 31, 2026. Some orchards offer sightseeing only, without fruit picking.

Jinyi Village, Jiangpu Subdistrict

Not far from Shangluo Village, Jinyi Village (锦一村) offers another scenic spot for persimmon viewing. Around the solar term of Frost's Descent on October 23, the fruit turns from green to yellow and then deep orange-red, hanging from the branches like little lanterns against the surrounding hills and farmland.

The village has three main viewing areas, each offering a different countryside experience. Visitors can admire the autumn scenery, take photos among the persimmon trees and enjoy the peaceful rural atmosphere.

The three viewing areas:

Zitian Park area (紫田公园区): Open hillside orchards with broad views of the countryside.

Waipojia area (外婆家片区): A rustic rural setting with scattered fruit trees and a small stream where visitors can enjoy the waterside scenery.

Taoyuan area (桃园片区): Dense persimmon trees laden with abundant fruit.

Tickets: A seasonal promotion offers adult admission for 16 yuan, with free entry for children under 1.4 meters. Each ticket covers one of the three areas, and a free shuttle connects the village committee parking area with the orchards. Scan the QR code to buy a ticket.

Local food: After exploring the orchards, stop at a village restaurant for local dishes such as pork ribs cooked in bamboo, free-range chicken and seasonal wild vegetables.

Guifeng Village, Lvtian Town

Nestled at the foot of Guifeng Mountain, Guifeng Village (桂峰村) is a long-established destination for persimmon viewing. More than 20 hectares of persimmon trees spread across the hills, their orange-red fruit set against traditional tiled-roof houses.

The viewing season generally runs from mid-October to early December, with the fruit at its most colorful in mid-to-late November. This year, the village has also added a new orchard of around 2 hectares, featuring 500 dwarf persimmon trees. At just 2 to 3 meters tall when mature, they make it easy to take photos with the fruit without climbing a ladder.

Visitors may also see local residents peeling and drying persimmons to make traditional dried fruit. Fresh and homemade dried persimmons may be available for purchase.

Local food: Try regional specialties such as braised pork, stuffed tofu and rice cooked in bamboo.

Nanping Village, Wenquan Town

Nanping Village (南平村) is another place to find Conghua's red persimmons, which should be at their sweetest from late October to November. The trees grow in scattered orchards on the hillsides, behind local homes and along a stream, creating small pockets of autumn color across the countryside.

Nearby experiences: Nanping is about a 10-minute drive from the main area of Conghua Hot Spring Scenic Area. After picking persimmons, stop for coffee at a local café surrounded by nature, or take a stroll along the Fengxi stream. Local farm restaurants are convenient places for lunch before heading on to a hot spring resort.

Mishi Village, Wenquan Town

Mishi Village (密石村) has around 100 hectares of persimmon orchards. The fruit is known for its vivid orange-red skin, juicy flesh and naturally sweet taste. The picking season lasts until the end of October, making this a timely stop for visitors hoping to sample the fruit at its freshest.

Beyond the orchards, the village's wooded hills, gentle trails, terraced fields and old village houses make for an easy autumn walk and countryside photography.

Nearby experiences: Conghua's main hot spring resort area is around a 15-minute drive from Mishi Village. Guangdong Hot Spring Hotel is one option for those looking to round off a day in the countryside with a soak.
