Stocking up for Chinese New Year in Guangdong's local markets

As the Chinese New Year approaches, the rhythm of festive shopping in Guangdong is picking up pace. From flowers and decorations to traditional desserts and seasonal treats, some of the most authentic festive flavors can be found in long-loved local markets and neighborhood streets. 

With the festive vibes in full swing, many of these local specialties are also being highlighted through the ongoing "Guangdong Goods Global Reach" campaign.

Yide Road, Guangzhou (一德路)

Known as one of Guangzhou's most bustling streets for Chinese New Year shopping, Yide Road is lined with stalls selling couplets, auspicious characters, festive decorations, and snacks. Red lanterns and paper couplets fill the street as shoppers browse shoulder to shoulder.

Yide Road is also widely known as one of the city's major hubs for dried seafood. The area is home to around 200 specialty shops and five large indoor wholesale markets, offering products such as abalone, shrimp, scallops, seashells and sea cucumbers—ingredients many local families stock up on for soups and Chinese New Year reunion dinners.
