Metro operators in Guangzhou, Guangdong province have introduced contactless payment services for foreign passengers with bank cards issued by four international card organizations.

The contactless "tap-and-go" service was introduced on Sunday, three days ahead of the opening of the China Import and Export Fair.

The supported card types include MasterCard, American Express, Visa and JCB cards issued abroad, as well as MasterCard and American Express cards issued domestically that support RMB transactions.

All bank cards must have contactless payment capabilities, according to Guangzhou Metro Group.

By holding the cards, foreign passengers do not need to purchase tickets in advance or download any metro service applications. Instead, they can simply tap their cards near the sensor area of the gates with the card organization's logo to quickly pass through.

Popularly known as the Canton Fair, the barometer of China's foreign trade will kick off its 138th edition on Wednesday. According to the event's organizers, 207,000 international buyers from 217 export markets have pre-registered, reflecting a 14.1 percent increase from the previous session.
