On August 5, the main structure of the Nanxi River Grand Bridge—the largest single-span bridge on the eastern Guangdong intercity railway—was completed.
Located in Chenghai District, Shantou City, the cable-stayed bridge spans a total length of 510 meters, with a main span of 280 meters. The two main towers rise to 95.5 meters and 98.5 meters, respectively.
The project faced complex geological challenges, requiring pile foundations to pass through 20-meter-thick layers of silt, fine sand, and weathered granite. With the longest pile reaching 100 meters and limited transport space near the river channel, high construction precision was essential.
Project engineers and workers overcame these difficulties using large-diameter rotary drilling machines and staged borehole expansion techniques, successfully completing 112 pile foundations.
As the project accelerates in the second half of the year, the completion of the Nanxi River Grand Bridge marks significant progress. Bridge installation will now extend toward both banks, bringing Shantou, Chaozhou, and Jieyang closer to realizing a “30-minute commuter circle.”
