Guangzhou Baiyun International Airport has recorded its busiest-ever Spring Festival travel season, as passenger and cargo volumes surged amid holiday travel across southern China.
Since the Spring Festival travel rush began on February 2, the airport has handled over 5.27 million passenger trips by February 21, making it the first airport nationwide to exceed five million travelers during this year's holiday period.
From February 5 to 15, daily passenger numbers remained above 260,000 for 11 consecutive days, rising above 270,000 on February 11-13. The post-holiday return rush then pushed volumes even higher. On February 21, the 20th day of the Spring Festival travel rush, the airport handled 1,676 flights and nearly 278,000 passengers, setting a new single-day Spring Festival record. Passenger flows are expected to remain elevated as the holiday period draws to a close.
Meanwhile, China Southern Airlines is expected to expand its international network from Guangzhou, with new routes aimed at offering travelers more options. Plans include a service linking Guangzhou with Bishkek (the capital and largest city of Kyrgyzstan) from late March, improving connectivity between southern China and Central Asia. Another proposed route would connect Guangzhou with Vladivostok via Harbin, which would become the city’s second air link to Russia after Moscow.
