During the National Day and Mid-Autumn Festival holiday from October 1 to 8, the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area (GBA) experienced a surge in passenger traffic. On October 7, Guangdong's provincial highway network reached a new single-day traffic record of 10.535 million vehicle trips, surpassing the previous peak of 10.291 million trips recorded on October 1, 2025. Additionally, railway passenger traffic also reached historic highs, with 21.807 million passengers transported during the holiday, according to China Railway Guangzhou Group.
The GBA served as the central hub for traffic flow. Of the 10.535 million trips across the province on October 7, over 70%, or 8.0197 million trips, were concentrated on GBA highways, reflecting a year-on-year increase of 10.83%.
The Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macao Bridge recorded 24,200 vehicle trips on October 7, a 55.97% increase year-on-year, while the Shenzhen-Zhongshan Link handled 172,600 trips, marking a 27.03% rise compared to the same period last year.
During the peak traffic period, Guangdong transportation authorities utilized advanced technology for traffic management. Drones conducted continuous aerial patrols along major bridges, including the Nansha Bridge, while AI-based sensing systems were deployed along multiple highways to monitor real-time traffic conditions.
Railway passenger traffic also hit historic highs. Between October 1 and 8, the China Railway Guangzhou Group transported 21.807 million passengers, an increase of 1.044 million (5%) year-on-year. October 1 marked the single-day peak, with 3.507 million passengers—the highest recorded for a single day.
High-speed rail accounted for a total of 17.866 million passengers during the National Day and Mid-Autumn Festival holiday, representing 81.9% of all railway travelers. The Guangzhou-Shenzhen-Hong Kong high-speed railway experienced its busiest day on October 4, serving 134,000 cross-border passengers, a 40% increase compared to the same day last year.
During the holiday period, the Guangzhou Group operated an average of 3,419 passenger trains per day, adding 358 extra trains, including 309 additional high-speed services and 49 conventional train services.
