China Southern Airlines has opened a new international inbound cargo terminal at Guangzhou Baiyun International Airport, introducing artificial intelligence and automated systems across its cargo-handling operations.
The terminal began operations on August 28, when a China Southern cargo flight carrying nearly 80 tons of goods completed the facility's first automated handling process. The facility covers about 25,000 square meters and is equipped with automated storage systems, driverless forklifts and automated container handling equipment.
According to China Southern Air Logistics, its AI-powered warehouse and scheduling systems can coordinate cargo storage, transportation, loading bays and vehicles. The changes have cut the processing time for an international inbound shipment from about 75 minutes to 60 minutes.
The terminal is designed to handle up to 1,600 tons of cargo a day at peak capacity. It is expected to process around 345,000 tons of international inbound cargo annually by 2030, with room for further expansion.
