Passenger numbers are expected to surge at Guangzhou Baiyun International Airport over the May Day holiday, which overlaps with the third phase of the Canton Fair. More than 1.2 million travelers are expected during the period, with domestic demand concentrated on major cities including Beijing, Shanghai, Chengdu, Hangzhou, Chongqing, and Nanjing.

From May 2, Guangzhou is expected to see increasing thunderstorm activity, with heavier rainfall and possible strong winds forecast between May 3 and 5. While weather conditions on May 1 are expected to remain relatively stable, officials say flight schedules and ground transport may be affected as conditions change.

Passengers are advised to monitor flight updates closely, arrive at the airport early, and allow extra time for check-in and security procedures:

  • Domestic flights:

Check-in and baggage drop close 40 minutes before departure.

Passengers without checked baggage are encouraged to use online check-in. Selected China Southern Air Shuttle routes allow security checks and boarding up to 15 minutes before departure, subject to airline updates.

  • International flights:

Check-in and baggage drop close 60 minutes before departure.

To manage demand, airport authorities are urging travelers to use public transport, such as metro and airport shuttle buses, where possible. If disruptions occur, passengers are advised to rely on official airline channels for rebooking and avoid unverified third-party services.

Special arrangements will also be in place for Canton Fair participants, including priority security lanes across all terminals and expanded "one-stop" services for international visitors at Terminals 2 and 3. Dedicated staff will be on site to provide assistance.

Designated fast-track channels are as follows:

  • Terminal 1: B Zone, lanes 17–18

  • Terminal 2: Domestic lanes 9–10; international lanes 17–18

  • Terminal 3: Domestic lanes 18–19; international lane 8

Passengers are reminded to strictly comply with civil aviation safety regulations on carrying personal electronic items, particularly power banks and lithium batteries.

  • Carry-on only: Power banks are not allowed in checked baggage.

  • Certification: Power banks must have clear "3C" markings. Unlabeled, unclear, or recalled products are not permitted on domestic flights.

Capacity limits:

  • ≤100 Wh: allowed

  • 100–160Wh: airline approval required, with a maximum of two units

  • >160Wh or unverified capacity: not allowed

  • In-flight use: Charging is prohibited during the flight, and devices must remain switched off.

  • Personal use only: Excessive quantities are not permitted.
