Guangzhou Metro Line 22 back section opens

The back section of Guangzhou Metro Line 22 commenced operations on December 29, marking a significant upgrade for the city's rail network with the transformation of Fangcun Station into a major three-line interchange.

The newly opened 13-kilometer north-south stretch, designed for speeds up to 160 km/h, introduces three stations: Fangcun, Xilang, and Nanjiao.

Originally a station on Line 1 since 1999, Fangcun Station has evolved into a modern three-line interchange connecting Lines 1, 11, and 22. Its strategic role is set to expand further, with future plans to link it via the northern extension of Line 22 to Baiyun Airport and to incorporate Line 28 (Foshan-Guangzhou-Dongguan Intercity Railway), eventually creating a four-line hub vital for the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area.

Xilang Station has also been upgraded to a four-line interchange, integrating Line 22 with existing Lines 1, 10, and the Guangfo Line. This strengthens its position as a key node for Guangzhou-Foshan integration, facilitating intercity travel.

Nanjiao Station is strategically located to serve a provincial industrial park in Liwan District, connecting with Huawet Station on the recently opened Line 10. This provides essential "last-mile" connectivity for businesses and residents.

Leveraging Line 22's high-speed design, it now offers a 17-minute direct ride south to Guangzhou South Railway Station, enabling swift access to the national high-speed rail network.
