The 2025 National Day and Mid-Autumn Festival holiday will officially begin on October 1 and last for eight days. A concentrated surge in travel demand is expected.
Highways
During the holiday (00:00 on October 1 to 24:00 on October 8), toll fees will be waived for passenger cars with seven seats or fewer. Traffic is expected to peak on September 30, with about 10.08 million vehicle trips. Between September 30 and October 9, the average daily traffic volume on Guangdong’s expressway network is estimated at 9.32 million vehicle trips.
The Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macao Bridge is expected to carry about 20,200 vehicle trips per day, while the Humen Bridge, Nansha Bridge, Huangpu Bridge, and Shenzhen-Zhongshan Link are forecast to handle approximately 160,000, 190,000, 180,000, and 160,000 vehicle trips per day, respectively.
Busy sections are expected to include the Guangzhou-Zhuhai East Expressway, Lechang-Guangzhou Expressway, South China Expressway, Zengcheng-Dongguan Expressway, Northern Second Ring Expressway, and Guangzhou-Foshan-Zhaoqing Expressway.
A return traffic peak is forecast for October 7 and 8, with about 9.51 million vehicle trips.
Railways
The holiday railway travel period runs from September 29 to October 10, lasting 12 days. The peak travel day will be October 1, when an estimated 3.55 million passengers will travel, an increase of 12.2% year-on-year. The Guangzhou Railway Group expects to handle 33.5 million passengers, averaging 2.792 million per day, up 10.9% year-on-year.
An average of 3,369 trains per day will be operated, an increase of 81 trains compared with last year. In addition, 3,376 extra trains are planned, including 2,861 EMU trains and 1,508 nighttime high-speed trains.
On the Guangzhou–Shenzhen–Hong Kong High-speed Railway, 189 trains per day will run, with about 1.5 million passengers expected during the holiday. At peak times, trains from Shenzhen to Hong Kong West Kowloon Station will depart roughly every 10 minutes.
Railway authorities will dynamically adjust transport capacity. Passengers can check train schedules via the 12306 railway website or station announcements. Travelers are advised to plan ahead, avoid peak hours if possible, and allow sufficient time for boarding.
Metros
On September 30, Guangzhou Metro is expected to see a passenger flow peak, with total ridership projected to exceed 11.8 million. On that day, Lines 1, 2, 3, 5, 7, and 8 will extend their operating hours by one hour.
From October 6 to October 8, service on Lines 1, 3, 5, and the western section of Line 12 (Xunfenggang–Guangzhou Gymnasium) will be extended by one hour. Lines 2 and 7 will be extended by two hours, with the last train from Guangzhou South Railway Station departing at 1:30 a.m. the next day.
In Shenzhen, on September 30, October 1, October 6, 7, and 8, all metro lines (except Line 20), along with MTR (Shenzhen) Line 13, will extend operating hours by one hour, with the last trains departing around midnight.
