Three-city rail plan aims to boost Guangdong connectivity

A new high-speed rail link is under study to connect the cities of Zhuhai, Jiangmen, and Yangjiang in Guangdong province, according to recent local planning documents. The proposed Zhuhai-Yangjiang line would be approximately 172 kilometres long, with a designed speed of 350 km/h.

The planned route would start at Zhuhai Central Station (Hezhou), pass through Jiangmen's Guanghaiwan Economic Zone, and terminate at Yangjiang North Station. The line is intended to connect with other major railways at both ends, including the Shenzhen-Zhuhai and Guangzhou-Zhuhai-Macao lines in Zhuhai, and the Guangzhou-Zhanjiang line in Yangjiang.

The planning documents indicate the aim is to improve westward rail connectivity for cities in the western Pearl River Delta region.

Separately, two other major high-speed rail projects involving Jiangmen are currently under construction. The Jiangmen-Zhuhai section of the Pearl River Delta-Zhaoqing high-speed railway is scheduled to open in 2026, with the full line expected to be operational by 2027. This line will connect Jiangmen with the new Pearl River Delta hub airport.

Additionally, the Shenzhen-Jiangmen Railway, a key section of China's national coastal high-speed rail corridor, is also under construction. It is designed to cut travel time between Shenzhen and Jiangmen to under one hour, enhancing transport links across the Pearl River Estuary.
