Maoming frozen lychees can be preserved for up to 18 months.
"Frozen lychee" products from Maoming, a major lychee-growing region in Guangdong province, can now be stored for up to 18 months while retaining more than 90% of their colour and flavour. Once thawed, the fruit is said to closely resemble fresh lychees in both taste and texture.
The new freezing technology is helping transform what was once a seasonal fruit into a year-round export. It addresses a long-standing challenge for lychees, which spoil quickly after harvest and are usually available only for a short season.
Local companies have recently engaged in discussions with US buyers, inviting them to visit processing facilities and explore potential cooperation.
The product has also been showcased at trade events, where buyers from countries including New Zealand and Australia, as well as those across Southeast Asia, have shown interest.
Producers hope the technology will help expand overseas sales by ensuring that Maoming lychees remain commercially viable well beyond their natural harvest season.
