Guangzhou's Conghua heats up with cool summer escapes and longan harvest

Nanping Village in Wenquan Town, Conghua District of Guangzhou, offers a refreshing summer escape, where children play in mountain streams and visitors wade through cool waters among lush longan orchards.

Spanning 4,403 acres, Wenquan's orchards are in peak season, with the late-ripening Chuliang variety prized for its plump shape, tender flesh, and 18–22% sweetness.

"Our late harvest is golden," says orchard owner Zhang Bo. With Wenquan longans ripening from late August to early September—beyond the usual peak season—they command premium prices: Chuliang sells for RMB 8–10 per jin (≈RMB 16–20 per kilogram, 30–50% above early varieties), while Shixia and Gushan No.2 go for RMB 6–8 per jin (≈RMB 12–16 per kilogram). Of the 1,900-ton annual yield, 1,400 tons are already sold, with the remaining 500 tons expected to sell out by the end of August.

An investment of  RMB 131 million by Pearl River Nanping Company has transformed the village with guesthouses, campsites, and dining facilities. Daily summer visits exceed 5,000, with homestay occupancy reaching 70%. Fueled by its booming longan industry and rural tourism, Wenquan is advancing its "High-quality Development Project for Guangdong Counties, Towns and Villages" for rural revitalization.
