Ten Guangdong-style mooncakes to try for Mid-Autumn Festival

From museum-inspired gift boxes and heritage flavors to IP collaborations and health-conscious recipes, Guangdong's mooncakes are getting creative while keeping their Cantonese roots. Here are ten worth a look this Mid-Autumn Festival.

A mooncake inspired by a classic painting

Garden Hotel Guangzhou has teamed up with the Guangzhou Museum of Art for a 2026 Mid-Autumn gift box inspired by a painting of hibiscus and reeds from the museum's collection. The box reinterprets the painting's hibiscus and reed imagery through a contemporary design, bringing traditional Chinese art into a festive gift. Inside are classic Cantonese flavors including double white lotus, eight-kernel and ham-five-kernel mooncakes.

A classic "swan egg" gets a lighter update

White Swan Hotel's "Swan Moon" series builds on the hotel's signature swan imagery and its distinctive oval "swan egg" design, first introduced when the hotel reopened in 2015. The Classic Gift Box can be ordered with either all egg-yolk lotus-seed paste or all coconut filling, while the Deluxe Gift Box combines the two. The 50g size and flaky, buttery pastry are designed for a lighter Cantonese-style bite, with egg-yolk lotus-seed paste and coconut as the two main flavors.

A taste of Lingnan through moonlit windows

Hotel Indigo Guangzhou Haixinsha turns Lingnan architectural details into its Mid-Autumn gift boxes. Its Classic Selection features six mooncakes in flavours such as date paste, red bean paste and salted egg yolk with lotus seed paste, while the Exclusive Selection offers four traditional Cantonese-style flavours, including double-yolk white lotus seed paste. The deep-red and midnight-blue boxes draw inspiration from Guangzhou's distinctive Manchurian windows, with geometric patterns and coloured designs recalling the city's old neighbourhoods. Under the moonlight by the Pearl River, the hotel invites guests to open a box of flavours framed by Lingnan's golden autumn.

A Mid-Autumn moon under a bamboo courtyard

Grand Hyatt Guangzhou's Mid-Autumn Festival Hamper draws on the traditional imagery of bamboo and the full moon, with packaging featuring Guangzhou's kapok flower and patterns inspired by Xiguan Manchurian windows. Three gift boxes cater to different tastes and budgets: four egg-yolk white lotus mooncakes in a lantern-inspired box, six molten custard mooncakes and a 10-piece assortment featuring egg-yolk white lotus, tangerine-peel red bean, ham-five-kernel, molten custard, coconut and jujube paste.

Six characters, six flavors

Aiqun Hotel has teamed up with Winsing Animation to create a playful Mid-Autumn gift box featuring its GG Bond IP. The lineup features six character-inspired flavors: GG Bond with custard, Phoebe with strawberry and fruit pieces, S Daddy with matcha and red bean, Mi Hu Boshi with corn and water chestnut, Super Q with molten chocolate, and Bobbie with coconut and French-style flaky pastry. The packaging also doubles as a collectible: the GG Bond design can be turned into a refrigerator magnet, and the box comes with a randomly selected GG Bond badge.

Cantonese classics meet new fillings

LN Hospitality's "Lingnan Mid-Autumn Gifts" series draws on Guangzhou's landscapes, architecture and traditional culture. The collection comes in three gift boxes: Yangcheng Splendor, Yangcheng Scenery and Eight Scenic Views, combining traditional Cantonese mooncakes with newer colorful soft-center fillings. Classic lotus-seed paste and five-kernel flavors remain at the heart of the collection, while the newer fillings target younger consumers.

A taste of old Guangzhou

China Hotel looks to some of Guangzhou's most recognizable cultural symbols, such as arcades, Lion Dance and Cantonese Opera, for its Mid-Autumn packaging. The flavors range from classic Cantonese choices such as double-yolk white lotus and ham-five-kernel to Teochew-style, savory and newer creations.

Xiguan windows frame the moon

Dongfang Hotel's gift box takes its visual cue from the four-petal lattice patterns of Xiguan Manchurian windows. Birds, southern flowers, landscape imagery and calligraphy are layered into the design, turning the box into a miniature Lingnan-style window scene. The lineup includes mini egg-yolk white lotus, classic double-yolk white lotus and eight-kernel mooncakes.

From heritage recipes to sea-salt red bean

Baiyun International Convention Center has developed a full range of Mid-Autumn gift boxes drawing on Lingnan landscapes and local culture. The selection includes traditional, premium and intangible-cultural-heritage-inspired white-clay mooncakes, alongside flavors such as double-yolk white lotus, ham-five-kernel, sea-salt red bean and flaky pomelo. The molds also feature Lingnan motifs including Lion Dance and kapok flowers.

From seasonal fruit to Mid-Autumn mooncake

Xianjinfeng, a signature lychee variety from Zengcheng, Guangzhou, is making its way into a new Mid-Autumn treat: a Xianjinfeng lychee snow-skin mooncake. It uses modern food-processing techniques to turn the seasonal fruit into a year-round product, combining the distinctive lychee flavor with the soft texture of a snow-skin mooncake. The move is part of a broader effort to extend Xianjinfeng from a seasonal fresh fruit into a year-round brand and create a new "lychee + festival" food experience.

How to enjoy mooncakes without overdoing it

The First Affiliated Hospital of Guangzhou University of Chinese Medicine has made its own line of mooncakes with eight reduced-sugar, lower-oil flavors, including black truffle mushroom, osmanthus mung bean and blueberry-mulberry.

The idea draws on the traditional Chinese concept that food and medicine share the same origin. Hospital physician Li Peiwu recommends treating mooncakes as a seasonal treat rather than a meal. His three tips are simple: eat an appropriate amount, choose a suitable time and pair mooncakes with tea or other drinks to help cut the richness. For most people, half a mooncake at a time is enough.
