Tilapia, a high-quality, efficient, and sustainable protein source, plays a key role in global food security. According to the Brazilian Fisheries Association, global tilapia production is projected to reach 7.3 million metric tons by 2025. As China's top producer, Maoming (Guangdong) contributes 279,600 metric tons annually—about one-seventh of the national total.
Guided by the principle that "good water breeds good fish," Maoming has built a distinctive tilapia industry cluster encompassing seed selection, farming, processing, sales, and R&D—reaching an output value of over 10 billion yuan. With over 16,000 farming households, the industry and its related sectors support more than 100,000 jobs.
Maoming is increasing investment in tilapia aquaculture technology, processing R&D, and brand development. The city has introduced the world's largest tilapia seed enterprise to enhance product quality and is nurturing leading processing companies. Efforts are underway to strengthen the entire industrial chain and expand both domestic and international markets.
