Meizhou to celebrate Lantern Festival by mixing tradition and modernity

The city of Meizhou in Guangdong will celebrate the Lantern Festival on March 3 with a public event featuring traditional dragon dances, a parade of intangible cultural heritage items, and an electronic music party. The activities are scheduled from 7:30 PM to 9:00 PM at Academician Square and the nearby Jiaying Ancient City area.

The program will include traditional lion and dragon dances, featuring an "eye-dotting" ceremony for the lions, followed by a parade showcasing intangible cultural heritage items from across Meizhou. The evening will also feature an electronic music party, concluding with a fireworks display over the Mei River.

City officials describe the event as a blend of local Hakka customs and contemporary entertainment for both residents and visitors.

Meizhou, known as the "Hakka Capital of the World," is a major cultural center for the Hakka people in China. The Lantern Festival, celebrated on the 15th day of the first month in the Chinese lunisolar calendar, is traditionally associated with family reunions and community gatherings.
