Baiyun District of Guangzhou is launching a 10-day spring festival this week, centered on the bloom of a locally developed cherry tree variety. The festival will be held at the Yongtai Table Tennis Sports Park in Baiyun District.

The festival's main feature is the display of over 200 'Guangzhou Cherry' trees (Cerasus × yedoensis 'Guangzhou'), a cultivar known for its vibrant pink-and-white blossoms. The event will run concurrently with an exhibition of amaryllis (Hippeastrum), flowers provided by the Guangdong Academy of Agricultural Sciences. In Chinese culture, the amaryllis is associated with good fortune, a symbolism linked to the sound of its name.

The program combines the floral displays with a range of public activities. Scheduled events include a tree-planting initiative, a weekend market featuring local crafts and intangible cultural heritage stalls, outdoor yoga sessions, and a parade where participants wear traditional Hanfu attire. Live music performances, an educational talk on reptiles, and an outdoor film screening are also on the agenda.

The festival has become an annual seasonal offering, integrating horticulture with community recreation. The trees in the park are currently at their peak bloom, a typical seasonal occurrence in the region from late February through March.
